Steampunk Socialista by FranBeau Steampunk Socialista by FranBeau
Second shaded version, see earlier drawing. Model was at Dragon Con in Atlanta, photo by me. Significant changes made include: changed boots to heavy boots with steel toes, added pocket watch and fob, added one hand holding flowers, changed hat, arched back just a bit, and drew hair flowing in the wind. Drawn with H, HB, 2B pencils, about 9 inches tall. Socialista=Socialite+Fashionista. Note: updated Sat, Sep11, 2010, white and black highlights added, contrast "tweaked" on computer...

All things good have essence of vintage. Sounds like perfume.

To me it dances on my tongue like a red vintage wine from France or Italy! :D

You do get some tastey and fruity ones from California but I am one for the deeper bodied French and Italian red wines for that state of sublime bliss that embodies the flavoursome world of vintage.

I love the light texture and shading on the skirt, it looks really nice - also like all the attention to detail on...well, everywhere! :D

I just love the detail you've rendered in the bodice. The flowing hair and the hems of the skirt flounces. The whole thing look ready to animate off the page.

That means a lot to me because after a couple years of trying to capture females in drawings nothing is more important than that difficult to capture character, expression, movement, and liveliness. Classic mid-century pin-up girl artists had this mastered. I'm trying to combine 19thcen. and medieval classic drawing technique, 20th century pin-up girl expression, and contemporary fashion such as steampunk. Thanks for commentary, LocationCreator!

Well, I happen to really like classic drawing technique, and that is what caught my eye first. Proportion was second, her face third, and her steampunkishness last but not least.
All enjoyable.

I could talk for a long time about proportion. Good discussion for an art class...

Proportion... You have that right about being a good art class topic. the anime' and the 9 to 12 head high fashion figures tend to take over... But heck, at least folks are drawing...

'zactly. I try to keep it real, although sometimes at the edge, usually with pin-up gals, but biologically possible. Face proportions are also fascinating: endless debate about universal beauty standard in the brain or not. I say yes, but also most of us are 90 per cent there anyway. Huge part of brain devoted to facial recognition and reading emotions.
